An Emulator of Arm based Acorn machines for Windows 98/ME/2000/XP

Site Last Updated: 17th January 2004

The Red Squirrel, Sciurus vulgaris leucourus, was once common throughout the British Isles, much like the Acorn Archimedes. It has now been mostly displaced by its more pushy North American cousin the Grey Squirrel, Sciurus carolinensis...

Apologies for the lack of updates on this site. Economic realities mean I have to concentrate on paid work. The ongoing success of Virtual Acorn will mean that new versions of RedSquirrel will continue to be released. Hopefully it wont be so long until the next version!

Suzi has written a little paint applet accessed via the paint icon on the task bar. Please have a go with it and send your pictures in. If they're good enough they'll be displayed in the RedSquirrel Gallery for us all to admire.

Old News

Red Squirrel has grown from my first attempt at emulating one of the early Arm2 based acorn machines written mainly to learn some win32/DirectX and partly for nostalgia.

This was going to be a pure Archimedes a440/1 (my first Acorn machine) emulator but I don't have specs on some of the older chips so I implemented a slow A5000. It has grown over the years to emulate all the way up to a StrongArm RiscPC albeit rather slowly. There is now a commercial version of RedSquirrel called VirtualAcorn which runs significantly faster due to it's JIT compiling Arm technology.

Red Squirrel has the following main features:

Note: To use the emulator you will need your own copies of the system roms. See the links page for how to obtain roms.

You can download the current version of the emulator from the download page
